The Clueless Christian

About the author

Hello

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

Before I go any further, there are two things you need to know: one – I love coffee; the world just seems better with caffeine. Two – I promote laughing as a remedy to most issues in life. Full disclosure: it produces a lot of wrinkles.

If you are happy with these things then please feel free to read on…

Two months before my fortieth birthday, I realized that God considers the number forty significant, clearly indicated by its many references in the Bible; be it forty days, a period of forty years or having done something at the age of forty. Like all those men and women whose names were mentioned in the Bible, I wanted to do something significant for God, but what?

Well, I could never memorize many scriptures, so becoming a preacher might prove difficult. Perhaps I was a better writer…, but my sister received distinctions for languages in senior school and I barely scraped through. What would Mrs. Verster, my English first language teacher, have to say about that? I shrugged aside the thought and decided to give it a go. My topic choices were limited. The only topic I was most familiar with was my Christian faith in the person of Jesus Christ. I set off to investigate all I could about Christianity, and it soon dawned on me that I would have to start at the beginning – Creation. Surprise!

Who would be the audience?

My immediate family was my first concern; my eight-year-old daughter might soon start asking questions on my religion. Furthermore, my only sister was an atheist at the time. If I was to engage with her in a conversation about defending my faith, I would significantly come up short. I wanted to be able to answer the most basic questions of the Christian faith and no longer stumble over my own words every time I were confronted with a question. To be honest, I was tired of not having the right answer.

So, the initial title of the draft manuscript was born, ‘Interpret scripture for children’. Eventually God surprised me with a fitting title to the book, The Clueless Christian. What started off as a half-hearted research topic turned into a six-year long investment of time and very little sleep.
